Description
This abstract impressionistic butterfly wing was created with oil pastels as part of a sketch prompt from my sketch group.
Butterfly wings perform different functions. They do more than help the butterfly, but their patterns and colors serve as a camouflage. Butterflies use their wings to blend into the background or foliage to avoid predators. The bright colors confuse the predator that he is untasty. Sometimes the wing color mimic harmful species, tricking the predators so the butterfly will leave them alone. The fine scales on the wings help keep the insect warm and insulated during the colder nights and days. The shape of the wings and scales on the wings allow the butterfly to maneuver.
